PSO coy on reasons for scrapping counsellor role

Presbyterian Support Otago is set to scrap its full-time counsellor role and refer her clients to other agencies.

But the reasons why the position within the Family Works team is to be disestablished remain shrouded in mystery.

Presbyterian Support Otago communications and marketing manager Warren Rosser said in an emailed statement the role would end on July 1, in line with other changes within the Family Works team.

The team now offers social work, counselling, emergency response and budgeting advice and runs a foodbank.

When quizzed on why the role was to be disestablished, Mr Rosser would not elaborate beyond a brief supplied statement.

"Presbyterian Support Otago has been reviewing the services we provide and we have remodelled our services to meet client and stakeholder needs across Otago,'' the statement said.

"From 1 July 2019 Family Works will be directing clients who would benefit from receiving support from a counsellor in Dunedin to other local agencies who provide this service.

"We have strong and established relationships with these agencies, and we have been working with them for some time.

"We are confident that the support our clients require will continue to be met through the joint work of social agencies in Dunedin.''
