"I didn't think he was going that fast," David Kaa, his Cambridge trainer, said.
Verification of the time by Harness Racing New Zealand would see Cambo lower the record of 2.43.4 set by Awesome Armbro at Alexandra Park in September, 2009. Awesome Armbro started from 30m that night and held out Changeover.
Cambo joined Kaa six weeks ago after being purchased for $3000 by Paul Green, of Morrinsville, Wayne Anstis, of Cambridge, Paul King, of Perth and the Christchurch-based Once Were Champions syndicate.
The rising 7yr-old Falcon Seelster-Electrofying gelding had not been successful since the Reefton Cup in December, 2009. That was one of four wins he recorded when trained by Robert Dunn for breeder Ian Dobson and golfer Michael Campbell.
Cambo changed hands and he was subsequently trained for one start by Geoff and Judy Knight at Roxburgh and more recently 21 starts by Rob Lawson at Te Rapa.
Cambo had been placed in his other two starts for Kaa.
"He is a good standing start horse and we bought him for claimers," Kaa said.
"I just work him on the lead and give him a fairly light workload. I have found that with the Falcon Seelsters."
