Man in court; others charged

A man arrested after an incident that sparked an armed offenders squad callout at a Weston address near Oamaru on Saturday has appeared in the Timaru District Court.

Ricky Millar Rigby (43) appeared yesterday on an unrelated charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm as the result of an incident in Christchurch on March 30, after he was arrested on multiple warrants for firearms offences at a Percy St address in Weston about 10.35pm after a more than seven-hour standoff with police.

He is scheduled for a first appearance before a judge today.

Rigby has yet to be charged in relation to the Weston incident.

He had been sought for several weeks after police appealed to the public for information on his whereabouts on April 2.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, confirmed a 24-year-old Timaru woman had been charged with obstructing police and would appear in the Oamaru District Court at a later date.

Police, including a dog squad from Dunedin, converged on the Percy St address about 3pm on Saturday and an armed offenders squad, also from Dunedin, was called in as a precaution as a section of the usually quiet suburban street, between Argyle and Charles Sts, was cordoned off.

Three other people were also arrested in Weston and charged with drug-related offences as the incident unfolded, Sgt Wilkinson said.

A 23-year-old Oamaru woman was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of utensils; a 29-year-old Oamaru man was charged with possession of cannabis; and a 26-year-old North Otago man was arrested for possession of cannabis, but later released on a precharge warning.

The two other people will appear in the Oamaru District Court on May 29.

Several armed police, a dog squad and at least eight marked police cars were at the scene for several hours.

During the incident, an armed officer guarding the Argyle St intersection was controlling traffic in the area and stopped each vehicle as it passed, asking drivers for their destination.
