The scheduled start of Football South's new girls-only Twilight League has been delayed as workers put the finishing touches to new artificial playing surfaces at Logan Park.

The league, designed for girls aged 5-10, was due to begin on Friday, but would now not get under way until May 17.

The "proactive'' decision by Football South would ensure the new facility was ready to use before players descended on it, Football South chief executive Chris Wright said.

While the playing surfaces themselves were ready, the finishing touches were still being added, including a new embankment, pathways, seating and a general tidy-up of the work site, he said.

"It's just maybe one to two weeks away from being available.

"We had already built in some buffer time into it, thinking that it could happen. It's just one of those things.''

There were no other matches scheduled for the new facility yet, but once a date for first use was confirmed, teams would be contacted "at fairly short notice'' and offered use of it.

"But until it's ready we don't want to commit to it.''

Council parks and recreation group manager Robert West could not be contacted yesterday.
