After more than two years, House of Breakthrough Church has finally found a larger place of worship for its Oamaru congregation.

Today, it will officially be handed the keys to Columba Church, in Wansbeck St, in preparation for its relocation from its church in Severn St.

The final service in its original home will be on Sunday and its first service at Columba on April 7.

House of Breakthrough pastor Damien Goodsir said the move was driven by the needs of its congregation, which numbered about 150 regular churchgoers.

"We needed a bigger place to meet on a Sunday. We have sort of outgrown where we are. This is the perfect place for us for the next stage as a church."

All of its activities, including its youth group programme, will be run from Columba.

Mr Goodsir said as Columba was a heritage building, there were limitations in regards to what could be done to it.

However, few changes were planned.

"We love the character and the history of the building. There's a couple of wee things we need to do just to suit our style of worship, but there's no major plans at this stage."

It ended a roughly two-year search for a new home, he said.

"We had had our eyes open for a couple of years, just looking for the right place ... I think it's what God had planned for us, which is why other doors had closed."

In September 2015, Columba's former congregation voted to dissolve as a group, in the face of dwindling numbers and cost increases.

Its last service was held in April 2016 and since then, the church has been used sparingly.

Ownership of, and responsibility for the church property that served its community for more than 130 years was transferred to the Southern Presbytery and Synod of Otago and Southland and the Columba Church Management Committee was formed.

Committee treasurer Bob Avis said he was pleased the building would continue to be used for its original purpose.

"We had several people that were interested but everybody wanted to change it ... they were nice people, but when we got an offer from another church, that was really the icing on the cake. That was just brilliant."

A handover service will take place at Columba today from 4pm.
