Basketball: Parade planned to mark Breakers' historic win

A parade up Auckland's Queen St on Friday will mark the Breakers' historic win in the Australian National Basketball League championship.

The Breakers made sporting history by becoming the first New Zealand team to win a title in a professional Australian sports code when they beat Cairns Taipans 71-53 in the third game of the championship series at the North Shore Events Centre.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown, who watched the win, said he was thrilled. He talked to the team about how Auckland could recognise the Breakers' performance.

He said they agreed on a Queen St parade and an event for fans in Aotea Square.

"We're working on strategies to make Auckland an events capital. Having great teams like the Breakers producing outstanding performances as we have seen over the past few weeks can only help us achieve that," he said.

"I have no doubt the All Blacks will take heart from what the Breakers have done as they look forward to that tournament (Rugby World Cup)."
