More than 3000 students took part in the annual O-Week event, getting into the mood and tearing up the dance floor.
Students dressed elaborately in homemade togas made from sheets and decorated with vines, as well as colourful wreathes, wings and tinsel.
New Zealand DJ/Production duo Sweet Mix Kids, Times x Two and Lacuna provided the entertainment.
First-year student Sam Coleman (18), waiting in line, said he expected the party to be ''pretty raucous'' and there was much chanting in the queue - most of it directed at Arana College.
However while some students were in a boisterous mood, the overall vibe was happy and positive.
Student Blessie Tioa (18), of Auckland, said O-Week was a great way to get to meet people ''especially if you're from somewhere else''.
Otago University Students' Association president James Heath said about 9pm the evening had gone smoothly.
College, Red Frog and Are You OK volunteers were at the event and St John also had ambulances on hand.
A police spokeswoman said about 10pm there had been ''no arrests or issues''.
