Today is a special day for Balclutha couple Les and Nellie Miller - they celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

"Looking forward, 60 years seems to be a long, long time, but looking back, it's not," Mrs Miller said.

Cards from the Queen, Governor-General, and Prime Minister John Key were among those congratulating the couple.

Les (81) and Nellie (82) met in 1947 at a dance at the Popotunoa Hall, between Clydevale and Waipahi, in South Otago.

Mr Miller grew up in Clinton until the family moved to Popotunoa when he was 15, and Mrs Miller grew up in Clydevale.

They were married at the Balclutha Presbyterian Church on April 28, 1951 and worked on farms around South Otago before owning their own farm. They later sold it, and Mr Miller worked at the freezing works at Finegand as a blacksmith welder and mechanic.

The couple love the South Otago area and Mr Miller said that while some might say the area was too cold, or too rainy, he would never want to live anywhere else.

"I'd sooner have my gumboots on than be in a drought," Mr Miller said.

They celebrated the milestone with family and friends at the Town and Country Club in Balclutha over Easter weekend.

Mr and Mrs Miller have three sons, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandsons.
