Rugby: Assurance given England will be based in South

The English are still coming and will be in the South for three weeks.

A report out of the United Kingdom yesterday said Auckland would be the base for the English side when it plays its pool games for the World Cup.

That contradicted information sent out by World Cup organisers last month which had the England side spending 16 nights in Dunedin, and five nights in Queenstown.

But it appears to be a case of some selective reporting from someone in the northern hemisphere.

The England team will be spending seven nights in Auckland as it prepares to play Scotland in its final pool game, and will also be in the city for five nights upon arrival in the country in late August.

But the team will not be in Auckland for the rest of pool play.

It will still spend 16 nights in Dunedin and five nights in Queenstown. Players will train at Carisbrook and the University Oval in Dunedin, and the Queenstown Events Centre while in the resort.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd communications manager Mike Jaspers said England management had confirmed its training venues in a release last week and the information had been wrongly interpreted by some media.

England plays Argentina on September 10, Georgia on September 18 and Romania on September 24, all at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

England had to shift its base after the Christchurch matches were canned because of the earthquake.
