A burning car was found in a gravel pit near Winton last night.
The abandoned vehicle was discovered off Winton-Wreys Bush Highway, in Southland.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) were called to the scene about 8pm.
A Fenz spokesman said a crew extinguished what remained of the blaze, but the car was already "completely burned out".
The matter had been left in the hands of the police, he said.
A police spokeswoman was unable to provide further details on the incident.
