Milestone ‘special’ to loyal Martin

Katey Martin will overhaul an obscure record when she takes the field for the Otago Sparks at the University of Otago Oval this morning.

The veteran wicketkeeper will play her 155th one-day game for Otago — that is one more than anyone else has managed for one province in New Zealand.

She will replace Canterbury stalwart Chris Harris at the top of the list. The evergreen "Harry" played 154 games for Canterbury from 1989 to 2010.

"I’ve said many times before I don’t play for the milestones but, yeah, it is pretty special," Martin said.

You will not find a more loyal Otago athlete than Martin. For the past 13 years, she has lived in Christchurch.

It would have been easier for her to throw her kitbag in with Canterbury but she has remained steadfast in her loyalty to her home province.

It is a characteristic which is often in short supply in the modern sporting environment in which  allegiances are traded for opportunities.

Martin’s cricket probably would have been better served by switching teams. But as far as the White Fern is concerned, she would not have been able to play with the same passion for any other provincial team.

The 33-year-old right-hander made her debut in January, 2002, almost 17 years ago. She has no immediate plans to retire and countered questions by suggesting she "could get to 200, you never know".

Martin could reach another couple of milestones today. She has scored 3970 runs (at an average of 30.07, including five centuries) in one-day games for Otago — 30 more and she will reach 4000 which is quite some effort. And just one more catch and she chalk up 100.

But that is not what keeps her going. She still loves the game and gets as much pride slipping on the Otago strip as she did when she made her debut. And she is not stale either. There is a new crop of players emerging and that has helped keep Martin enthused.

"It has been quite refreshing this year with a lot more youngsters in the team. It is really good to be able to give back to those girls ... and that makes you want to keep playing."

Otago will play Auckland in back-to-back one-day games this weekend. Auckland (19 points) and Central Districts (20 points) lead the standings with Otago in third place on nine points.

The Sparks have been winning one game and losing the next, so they will be desperate to win both matches to stay in touch and give themselves a chance to make the final.

"They are quite a balanced side. They’ve got a few White Ferns and a few other who are knocking on the door to play for the White Ferns.

"But as a team, if we can all chip in and contribute then that is what will probably set us apart from them. We’ve got a lot more experience in certain areas than them as well.

"But one win a weekend is not going to get us into the final. We really do need to get points out of it."
