Residents Bernard Kane, Margaret Hall and Trevor Tattersfield have petitioned the Queenstown Lakes District Council asking it to redesign the intersections connecting Golf Course Rd with Ballantyne Rd and McDougall St.
They were concerned there was limited visibility of oncoming vehicles when turning right on to McDougall St, and the ever-increasing amount of traffic on Ballantyne Rd had made both the intersections with Golf Course Rd dangerous and inadequate.
Mr Kane said on Friday they had gained over 150 signatures from village residents, some of whom had some "awful near misses".
"Some won’t turn right to go into town now, they’re so scared," he said.
"I’ve been here [at the village] for five years and the increase in traffic has been tenfold.
"I hope it doesn’t take a death to change [the intersections]."
Mr Tattersfield, a former roading engineer and councillor, believed both intersections created a "significant safety hazard".
He planned to keep the pressure on council until something was done.
"We might even have to get political, get MPs involved."
Council spokeswoman Rebecca Pitts said yesterday the residents’ pleas had been heard and stop signs would be installed at both intersections this month.
"Anything further, such as major intersection design improvements will be considered in the wider context of the Wanaka integrated transport programme business case, alongside the town centre masterplan," she said.
