A person who was trapped in a vehicle after it crashed off a bridge north of Haast yesterday evening has died.
A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene, on the Haast Highway (State Highway 6) at the Moeraki River Bridge, after being alerted at 6.53pm.
Three people managed to get out of the vehicle safely but one person had remained trapped, police said.
Fire services and ambulance were also in attendance.
St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said a helicopter from Greymouth had arrived at the scene around 8.30pm.
The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
