Another man charged under Gambling Act

Another person has been charged under the Gambling Act in connection with Rugby Southland's involvement with an Invercargill poker machines venue.

A Department of Internal Affairs spokesman confirmed a man, who has name suppression, faces four charges under section 113(d) of the Gambling Act.

He is expected to appear in the Invercargill District Court on April 12.

In December, an employee of the union pleaded guilty in the Invercargill District Court to two charges under the Gambling Act concerning conflicts of interest in regard to gaming machine grants.

The man, whose name was suppressed, was discharged without conviction.

In that case, Internal Affairs alleged in its summary of facts that Rugby Southland was approached in 2007 by the Lion Foundation and asked to expand its poker machine operations in the province.

In return, Rugby Southland, after buying South Invercargill-based poker machines venue, the Strathern Inn, could expect an rise in grants from the Lion Foundation, one of the largest pokies trusts in the country.

Grants to Rugby Southland increased markedly during that time.

The Lion Foundation has also been charged with breaching the Gambling Act, and will appear at a status hearing in the North Shore District Court on March 31.
