Every man, woman and dog was basking in the sun as the weather turned it on for Labour Weekend in Otago.

However, temperatures are expected to crash after a warm October.

Dunedin reached the early 20s at the weekend and Central Otago was even hotter — a high of 25.6degC was recorded at the Alexandra Airport on Sunday.

WeatherWatch warns a cold southerly change will briefly affect daytime temperatures by up to 15degC in some places.

The southerly change will make inroads on the country late on Wednesday and worsen on Thursday and Friday.

Highs could drop by 10degC in Otago and Southland.

While the sun was still out yesterday Peter Kennett and daughter Kate were guided by watchful pooch Podge as they embarked on a paddleboard journey in  Otago Harbour.

The cairn terrier-Sydney silky cross was on board all the way as they surfed from the Otago Yacht Club to St Leonards and back, Ms Kennett said.

"She loves it, but she hates getting in the water. She definitely knows not to go in.

"Last I summer pushed her off once and she came back on to the board. I just wanted to see what she would do."

The still, warm weather was perfect for the activity.

"It’s probably the calmest we’ve seen it. We go out most weekends."
