The final stage of Wanaka’s $9 million electricity upgrade is set to begin this week.

The installation of 12 new 66kV power poles in Riverbank Rd will start today and overhead lines will be connected next week.

The upgrade has been taking place since last October, when work began on a new substation on the corner of Riverbank Rd and Ballantyne Rd.

The substation will provide a hub for high-voltage electricity supply into Wanaka and the surrounding areas and also add options to the existing Wanaka substation that will allow Aurora to reroute supply in the event of a fault.

The upgrade has been done in response to increased electricity demand in the town due to local and visitor population growth.

It is expected the upgrade will be fully completed in November.
