Duo a roaring success at ice fundraiser

A Lion King tribute wowed the judges to scoop first place at the fourth annual Stars on Ice fundraiser in Queenstown on Saturday.

Ice-dancing duo George Muggleton and Caragh Early were chosen as the winners of this year’s competition after a graceful performance to the Circle of Life song from the well-known movie, which captivated the crowd at Queenstown Ice Arena.

The event raised funds for the Queenstown Ice Skating Club, whose members danced between the performances of the eight pairs competing for the trophy.

Mr Muggleton said it felt "pretty damn great to win" and he was waiting to start clapping for one of the other pairs before he was announced as the winner, along with his coach Ms Early.

"There’s actually a video of me when I first got on the ice and it’s way worse than what I am now."

Each pair was made up of a club member and a Queenstown "star".

They all performed in a daytime show and an evening show in what has become the club’s biggest fundraising event.

Dancers Jodi Walters and "Cookie" were chosen as the People’s Choice winners for raising the most money for the club.

Former Queenstown mayor Vanessa van Uden was on hand to help judge the competition, and Queenstown Lakes district councillor Craig Ferguson kept the atmosphere flowing as the event’s MC.
