A visit to race meetings at Omakau and Cromwell on Friday and Saturday revived memories of winning the Clare Memorial Cup on Treasure Pond for former ace jockey Bob Skelton.

Treasure Pond won the feature race at the Vincent Jockey Club (now Central Otago Racing Club) meeting at Omakau in 1957.

The Treasure Hunt mare was owned and trained at Omakau by the White brothers, Johnny and Neil.

Kevin White, a son of Neil, is on the committee of the CORC, along with Michael White, a grandson of Neil.

Skelton also won the 1957 Moran Memorial Challenge Cup at Omakau on Lumphanan, trained at Gore by Ted Winsloe.

He won the 1958 Moran Cup on Treasure Pond.

The Clare Cup was then for hack-rated horses and the Moran Cup the open event.

Skelton rode a host of winners when based at Wingatui between 1954 and 1965.

He won the 1976 Melbourne Cup on Van Der Hum and topped the NZ jockeys' premiership nine times.

He was awarded an MBE and is a member of the NZ Sports Hall of Fame and Racing Hall of Fame.

Skelton (76) is retired at Mornington (Melbourne).

He has been visiting his son, Mark, at Ophir.

"I remember Treasure Pond because she later left Trelay," Skelton said.

"I rode him in the Wellington Cup.

"He broke down 100yds out and still finished third, which was one of my biggest disappointments in racing."

That was in 1973, when the Wellington Cup was won by Rustler (ridden by David Peake) by half a head from Glengowan with a nose to Trelay.

Trelay was trained by Hector Anderton, father-in-law of Skelton.

Trelay (by Mellay), winner of 22 races, was retired to White Robe Lodge stud and became a notable sire of jumpers.

Skelton won the Wellington Cup on Ark Royal (1959), Great Sensation (1961-62-63), City Court (1969), Rose Mellay (1974) and Royal Cadenza (1977) when the race was over two miles, or 3200m.

Skelton won the Clare Memorial Cup on the Wilson Ellis-trained Caravel at the 1960 jubilee meeting of the Vincent JC.

Skelton rode four winners - Naseby, Recluse, Sports Date and Wondon - on an eight-race card at Cromwell in 1958.

He can recall riding in races at Cromwell against his brothers, Bill (seven times leading jockey) and Frank.
