NZ Transport Agency Coastal Otago maintenance contract manager Nick Rodger says discussions with neighbouring landowners is under way.
The flooding was caused by above-average rainfall in Waitaki this year and a blocked culvert under nearby State Highway 1, linked to a ‘‘stranded wetland system’’.
Once the agency gained access to land, work would begin in two weeks to enable the wetland system to be reconnected.
‘‘A small culvert will initially be thrust under the highway to balance the water level in the wetland system, with a larger culvert to be installed this summer, or when water levels permit.’’
The Waitaki District Council road has been under a caution warning since May 10.
