A 20-year-old who broke into a $2 million Queenstown mansion in November and had a week-long party with friends has been sentenced to two months' prison but will not serve any more jail time.

Finlay George was also ordered to pay $50,000 when he appeared in the Queenstown District Court today, One News reported.

He was released based on time served.

The party started after George's mother, the property manager of the house, left for holiday in Australia and George texted friends and invited them to the house.

Prosecutor Ian Collins told the court the party continued for seven nights and the house was trashed, with holes in the walls, vomit on the carpet, alcohol and food traipsed through the house and vandalism of the bathrooms.

The court was told George was remorseful and had written a letter of apology to the home's owners.
