US rapper Kendrick Lamar began his concert with a bang last night, a pyrotechnic explosion sending 16,000 fans crazy as he took to the stage.

Lamar started his set at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin with his hit song DNA.

The rapper was dressed in black and alone on centre stage, his band to the side.

The crowd was on its feet from the first beat, as a simple light show and large screen lit up the stage. Lamar did not say a lot early on, letting his songs do the entertaining.

Explicit language warning

He stopped the music once to tell fans in the dancing area to make their way to the front if they felt like they were in trouble.

People in the stadium's stands were dancing in the aisles, with everyone on their feet.

Lamar has been touring in Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide, and will be heading to Auckland for concerts tomorrow and Friday before leaving for Sydney.

He has received accolades throughout his career, including 12 Grammy Awards.

This year, his album Damn became the first non-classical and non-jazz album to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music.

Police said shortly after the concert began there had been no serious disorder issues.

Comments

A kind treatment of a poor concert. The sound, production, front man, and content was overall just terrible.
