The NZ Transport Agency is still waiting for a letter from the Central Otago District Council explaining why the council needs more funding for local road maintenance.

Yesterday, the Otago Daily Times reported the council was concerned at receiving $407,000 less than requested for local road maintenance from the 2018-21 National Land Transport Programme.

The agency’s system manager, Graeme Hall, said although the numbers were only an indication, and the final decision would be released at the end of August, there was an increase of $1.4million from the 2015-18 programme.

The council was likely to receive a 7% increase in funding from the 2015-18 programme which he said was ‘‘significant’’.

Mr Hall said a proposed new funding streams for footpath maintenance, not previously covered by the agency, could be an opportunity for the council.

‘‘This could be a significant contributor to Central Otago District Council’s budget, freeing up funding from that category for other work on the network.’’
