Bins good, pools bad, says survey

Clutha residents may not be satisfied with their swimming pools, but they are fairly happy with parks and reserves, and the performance of their council.

The Clutha District Council's annual resident survey, which interviewed 630 residents in November last year, was presented at a corporate services committee meeting last week.

The survey is used to gather feedback about council services, gives an indication of their uses and provides accountability towards performance targets.

It revealed the top rating aspect of council services was its wheelie bins with an average rating of 4.64, on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being very satisfied; 83% of respondents used wheelie bins.

Library services also ranked highly, receiving an average rating of 4.56, with information services, at 4.51, rounding off the top three.

Footpaths and swimming pools received the lowest average ratings, of 3.06 and 2.92 respectively.

The percentage of those surveyed who were satisfied with the district's pools has dropped from 61% in 2006 to 31% in 2010.

Cold or fluctuating pool temperatures and cold changing-room temperatures were the most common complaints, followed by the need for upgrades, making it the lowest-rated council service.

Satisfaction of both town and rural water supplies were also on the downward trend.

Those satisfied with the pressure and flow of town water supplies dropped from 82% in 2009, to 70% in 2010, while satisfaction with the same supply in rural areas remained steady at 63%.

Satisfaction with taste and cleanliness dropped from 59% to 44% in town, and from 46% to 43% in rural areas.

On the other hand, 93% of those surveyed were satisfied with Naish Park and 87% were satisfied with parks and reserves in general.

The council itself appears to be pleasing its residents.

The overall satisfaction in the performance of the Clutha District Council increased from 60% in 2009 to 62% in 2010, while satisfaction with the effectiveness and advice from staff increased from 65% to 80%.
