Wanaka residents are speculating on the fate of the late Gra and Olive West's concrete block lakefront home in the heart of town, after confirmation yesterday the 1131sq m property has been sold.
The 1950s house, rateably valued at $4.22 million, is overshadowed by a three-storey commercial complex housing hospitality, retail and tourism businesses.
Tenders closed last week.
Lawyer Grant Fyfe, of Checketts McKay, said yesterday he could not comment on who had bought the property, what the price was or the number of tenders received.
"I have no information on what is going to happen. I just don't know," Mr Fyfe said.
He believed the information could be made available eventually in statistics put out by the New Zealand Real Estate Institute and Valuation New Zealand, but it was not his role to release the information, Mr Fyfe said.
He confirmed settlement was expected to take place within the next month.
Wanaka residents have been debating the property's future since it was advertised for sale in late November.
Some wanted the Queenstown Lakes District Council to buy the property for a community purpose, such as a town square, or to preserve the house for public uses.
However, the council did not tender for the property.
