Dillon Teneti (16) is passionate about music, and that passion was rewarded on Saturday night when he won the APRA lyric writer's award at the SmokefreeRockquest in Wanaka.

His song Red Dragon, which is about a person whom he was reluctant to identify, was written for the band Zodiac, in which Dillon plays guitar and sings.

The Year 12 drama and arts student is new to song-writing, only having written his first piece at the start of this year.

"I really like music, although I had never written a song before.

I found myself starting to make up songs and I decided to write one for the band."

He wrote mainly rock, although he was branching out into hip-hop, he said.

"The songs are mainly about things that have happened during the day, and sometimes they are about girls," he said.

He starts with the tune while "mucking around on the guitar.

Then the drum starts playing in my head and I get the beat".

Arts co-ordinator Ben Whitaker said Dillon was a great musician.

English and drama teacher Debbie Vercoe said he was enthusiastic to boot: "He would bring his mattress to the music suite at school to sleep, if he was allowed."
