An experienced kayaker from Europe "who should have known better", was levied an instant $300 fine for not wearing a life jacket on the rough waters of Lake Wakatipu, in Queenstown, yesterday.
The woman was brought in by the Queenstown Lakes District Council harbourmaster's office and Queenstown police were involved.
Harbourmaster Marty Black said the woman, aged in her 20s, paid the fine immediately.
"No exceptions - no jacket, ticket.
"That's the philosophy.
"[On] boats under 6m, everyone must wear a life jacket at all times; under 12s on all boats," Mr Black said.
