The Pune Warriors picked up Ryder for $US150,000 ($NZ196,773) in the second phase of the auction after the burly allrounder attracted no bids in the first phase 24 hours earlier.
Ryder and spinner Nathan McCullum will be teammates at Pune but the other New Zealand players are spread around the other franchises for the tournament starting on April 8.
Ross Taylor attracted comfortably the biggest bid, his $US1 million deal with the Rajasthan the 15th biggest for any player and the eighth-largest for a non-Indian player.
Next highest New Zealander was captain Daniel Vettori, with $US550,000 from the Royal Bangalore Challengers, and Brendon McCullum's $US475,000 from the Kochi franchise.
The others signed are Scott Styris for $US200,000 at the defending champion Chennai Super Kings, James Franklion for $US100,000 at the Mumbai Indians and Nathan McCullum for $100,000 at Pune.
Nathan McCullum, 30, said he stayed up until 1am on Sunday morning monitoring his laptop to watch the auction unfold.
"It was a little bit of a surprise but I'm pretty happy about it," he told the Otago Daily Times.
"It is going to be a good challenge and I'm looking forward to playing with some other international players and in the IPL."
McCullum understands his deal is for three years.
"All I know is I got bought in the auction and I haven't heard anything else. I guess things will unfold in the next few weeks."
