Plans for new Leith protection work released

The Otago Regional Council has released plans for $2 million in flood protection work at the Dundas St bridge in Dunedin.

The work involves the construction of an additional culvert next to the bridge on the Water of Leith and associated works upstream and downstream.

The design objective at the location was for it to cope with a flow of 171 cumecs.

The council plans to transfer ownership of the culvert to the Dunedin City Council, which owns the bridge, after the work.

The design has been endorsed by the regional council and can go out for tender.

The work is part of the Leith flood protection scheme and is expected to start in November.

However, the University of Otago has requested the works be delayed so they do not interfere with its 150th anniversary celebrations.

The regional council is compiling a report on what impact this would have.

It requires permission from the university for resource consent of the project.
