When staff at Moana House heard about the event they offered their services and spent most of yesterday putting up the main marquees.
Patrick Matehaere said they were also invited to perform at the festival.
The group was "a bit nervous" but spent some time practising yesterday for their 45-minute set.
However, festival director Bernadette Moroney knew they would not be alone.
"A lot of the guests often start creating off-the-cuff bands. People get to know each other quickly," she said.
The festival is now in its 36th year and simply "being there" will be the highlight for her.
"It's the atmosphere of the people."
The line-up includes Mara!, and the String Contingent, both of Australia, Gore-born and Texas-based musician Jackie Bristow, and Dunedin's Footspa.
The festival runs from today until January 3 and is hosted by the New Edinburgh Folk Club.
