The Otago men’s under-19 and under-16 golf teams each finished second in the South Island age-group teams championship which concluded with the final round on the Templeton course in Christchurch yesterday.
The Canterbury under-19 quintet, with three senior representatives in the team, was never threatened after taking a 24-stroke lead after the first round on Wednesday.
Otago was comfortably in second place, ahead of Southland in third, Tasman fourth and Aorangi fifth.
In the under-16 event, Otago went into the final round with a 13-stroke buffer but Canterbury ran hot while the Otago team could not repeat its second-round performance.
Once again, Otago was second, an impressive 88 strokes in front of Tasman.
The prospect of re-introducing schoolboy matches against Aorangi and Southland for the Piper Cup and Ben McCorkindale Memorial look bleak.
Neither province could come up with an under-16 team and their under-19 teams finished third and fifth respectively.
Canterbury’s Dominic Brettkelly took the honours in the under-19 individual event posting rounds of 68, 71 and 72 for a sub-par total of 211.
Jimmy Zheng (Howick) won the under-17 title by two shots while Jayden Ford (Judgeford) took the honours in the under-15 contest.
