Otago age-group teams second

The Otago men’s under-19 and under-16 golf teams each finished second in the South Island age-group teams championship which concluded with the final round on the Templeton course in Christchurch yesterday.

The Canterbury under-19 quintet, with three senior representatives in the team, was never threatened after taking a 24-stroke lead after the first round on Wednesday.

Otago was comfortably in second place,  ahead of Southland in third, Tasman fourth and Aorangi fifth.

In the under-16 event, Otago went into the final round with a 13-stroke buffer but Canterbury ran hot while the Otago team could not repeat its second-round performance.

Once again, Otago was second, an impressive 88 strokes  in front of Tasman.

The prospect of re-introducing schoolboy matches against Aorangi and Southland for the Piper Cup and Ben McCorkindale Memorial look bleak.

Neither province could come up with an under-16 team  and  their under-19 teams finished third and fifth respectively.

Canterbury’s Dominic Brettkelly took the honours in the under-19 individual event  posting rounds of 68, 71 and 72 for a sub-par total of 211.

Jimmy Zheng (Howick) won the under-17 title by two shots while Jayden Ford  (Judgeford) took the honours in the under-15 contest.
