Beaten by escalating temperatures

Monday's heat beat three Wanaka firefighters and one police officer, each intent on achieving a 30-minute escalator climb to raise money for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

Just one of the five participants, Const Bruce McLean, was able to complete the challenge in the intense heat, which made the climbers feel dizzy.

But stair climb organiser Glen Thurston said the time was still well spent and at least $3000 was raised during the endurance event.
