Hitchhiker assaulted

Wanaka police are searching for the occupants of a silver car after they allegedly assaulted a hitchhiker near Albert Town yesterday morning.

Constable Mike Thomas said a 29-year-old man was driving near Albert Town when his vehicle ran out of fuel.

He waved down a car, and its three occupants took him back through Albert Town to a Department of Conservation reserve at the end of the outlet track.

Const Thomas said the hitchhiker was then assaulted by the three males in the car, who repeatedly kicked and punched him.

He received moderate injuries but did not require hospital treatment, Const Thomas said.

Wanaka police are now searching for a dark grey, four-door sedan with tinted windows, a spoiler and chrome mag wheels.

Police would also like to hear from anyone who has information about the incident.
