Wanaka volunteers Liz Hall and Moira Fleming could be excused for thinking they were experiencing case of deja vu when they settled down with paint brushes, terracotta tiles and history books this week.

Mrs Hall and Mrs Fleming were members of the original committee that organised Wanaka's popular Millennium Tile Pathway in 2000.

Following 10 years of bumps and scrapes from lawn mowers, some of the tiles had been chipped or broken, sparking a $10,000 project to protect and repair the tiles.

Mrs Hall and Mrs Fleming were the original calligraphers and artists who inscribed brief histories on many of the 2000 tiles along the waterfront before it was officially opened on November 21, 2001.

"Here we are, still painting tiles 10 years down the track.

"The project has been a bit bigger than expected," Mrs Hall said.

The stories on about 20 tiles have been repainted by Mrs Hall on site, but at least another 20 have been uplifted and new ones are now being prepared at her home.

A concrete cobblestone edging has also been installed between the grass and tiles to prevent further lawnmower and vehicle damage.

Repairs project organiser Roger Gardiner said the Queenstown Lakes District Council had provided $6000 towards the repairs, with the balance of the costs and labour provided by the Wanaka Lions Club and the Wanaka Residents Association.

"The tiles certainly create a lot of interest for locals and visitors and it is important that they are repaired and preserved," he said.
