A strategy for the Waitaki district to make the most of having 80,000 visitors in New Zealand next year for the Rugby World Cup has been made public.
It was approved by the Waitaki District Council on Wednesday after being prepared by the Waitaki RWC2011 co-ordinating committee in an attempt to manage activities during the event in September and October for the benefit of communities in the district.
The committee will continue to liaise with groups and organisations throughout the district leading up to and during the World Cup.
Already, two major events are planned - the Golden Oldies rugby tournament between September 30 and October 2 which could attract up to 600 players, culminating in a World XV versus Waitaki Wasps match, and a Heritage rugby game on September 23.
The strategy outlines how the council, Tourism Waitaki and I-Site in Oamaru can assist.
Businesses, schools, the Aoraki Polytechnic, the Chamber of Commerce, artists and volunteers are all encouraged to be involved.
Initiatives include:
• Businesses training Rugby World Cup ambassadors to help visitors.
• Banners in Oamaru and other district towns.
• Local artists' exhibition themed around the cup or nations playing in it.
• A central point to answer questions and keep people informed about what is happeningGolden Oldies brochures at Christchurch and Dunedin airports.
• School quizzes and competitions.
• A healthy eating and exercise plan for children.
• An All Blacks reunion.
• A Campervan park.
• Promoting the district's attractions.
