Concerned citizens had their say yesterday on the future of Tomahawk Lagoon.

The Otago Regional Council held a day and a night session at Grants Braes Football Club inviting people to ''shape the future'' of the lagoon.

Participants shared their visions and goals which would shape future research and projects.

Charlotte Smith, who is building a house on the hill above the lagoon with her family, said she came to the workshop because she wanted to ensure the water body was clean in the future.

Tomahawk Lagoon is regularly the site of cyanobacteria, which is toxic to humans and dogs.

''We have a black Lab which we hope can swim there.''

She also hoped her young son could swim there when he grew up, and ''it would also be nice to see a bit more native planting around the area''.
