The sand near Brighton Domain is temporarily transformed into an intricate artwork.

San Francisco artist Ian Ross created the piece on Tuesday using a rake, and will install other similar pieces on beaches around Dunedin for the next week while he is here.

Ross described his sand art as ''an installation in nature''.

''When I work like this I never have a plan. I like to work in the moment and let the composition develop.''

He liked how the pieces were temporary and purely creative, he said. ''I push it towards something before the ocean comes in and takes it away.''

Ross is in town painting a large mural inside Heritage Coffee, in Vogel St.
