Eu Ho Siew is an example of many competitors who have turned up for the Masters Games.

For them it is not about winning medals and doing their very best.

It is about competing in as many events as possible and taking part in what is a very friendly competition.

The Malaysian-born Siew has lived in Australia for more than 20 years, and is now a resident of Alice Springs.

He was playing table tennis yesterday but had already competed in athletics and hoped to play tennis later in the week.

''I just enjoy all the sports. I had competed at the South Island Masters Games in Nelson last year and when I was in the South Island last week I saw these were on,'' he said.

''So I thought, why not? Everyone is really friendly and and they are played in good spirit.''

Plus, he enjoyed the good weather in Dunedin.

The Edgar Centre may have a been a tad chilly yesterday, as the temperature barely got to double figures in the morning, but Siew (40) was not complaining.

''In Alice Springs at this time of year it is just hot. Somewhere between 36degc and 42degC. If you are lucky you might get something like 32degC.''
