Board to consider plans for reserve

Plans by the Highcliff Trust to use land in the Waikouaiti recreation reserve for an equestrian cross-country track have been opposed by other East Otago sporting groups.

The lessees, the Waikouaiti Golf Club and the Palmerston-Waikouaiti Clay Target Club, do not support the proposal for land at the southern end of Edinburgh St, next to the golf course.

The Highcliff Trust hopes to use the land to stage the Springston Trophy, New Zealand's major pony club event, in 2012.

But the Waikouaiti Golf Club has advised the Waikouaiti Coast Community Board it wants to extend the golf course by nine holes.

At this week's board meeting in Waitati, community board chairman Gerard Collings said efforts had been made with Dunedin City Council staff to see if both parties could be accommodated on the land.

They have been asked to forward business plans to the board's meeting at Waikouaiti on January 26.

"We need two firm proposals sitting in front of us," Mr Collings said.

Negotiations had been ongoing for 12 months without solution.
