Study of births

Induced births at Dunedin's Queen Mary Maternity Centre are being studied.

Dunedin Hospital women's health medical director Dr Andre Smith said a fifth-year Otago medical student would analyse the centre's induced births this summer, and would present the findings to the department next year.

Induced births are considered to increase the likelihood of women needing a Caesarean section.

Dr Smith said the review was examining case-by-case the reasons for inducing, outcomes for mother and baby, analysis of placenta, and the method of induction. A review of international literature was taking place, as well as a look at year-on-year trends at Queen Mary.

He emphasised the review was not designed necessarily to cut the rate of inductions.
