Dunedin City Council events team leader Marilyn Anderson said ballgoers did not have to dress in 1940s clothing, but organisers felt it appropriate to mark Anzac weekend with the war-period theme.
She also expected the majority of the 700 tickets which went on sale yesterday to be bought by North Islanders, who enjoyed travelling to the event.
"[Going by] history, we would expect the tickets to be hugely popular. Don't be disappointed," she said.
While some Middlemarch men have yet to find love at the ball, it has resulted in five weddings and many success stories.
Tickets cost $50 for the dance and $90 for the Dunedin train and dance.
