Sergeant Graeme Evans, of Dunedin road policing, said a fleet of 10 new blue patrol cars was being introduced throughout New Zealand.
One would begin operating in the Southern district towards the end of January.
The blue vehicles would be the latest addition to the police's coloured highway patrol vehicles.
Recent highway patrol vehicle colours have been maroon, orange and red, in addition to the traditional white.
Sgt Evans said the blue cars added a bit of variety to the fleet ``much the same way as the red and orange marked highway cars do''.
``The novelty factor will also hopefully drive conversations among people who see them out and about on the road and provide an additional prompt for people to be conscious about road safety,'' Sgt Evans said.
