When fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld wanted to do something different for his promotional material, he turned to a Dunedin-trained model.

Stella Maxwell shot the Chanel art director's look-book last month, the first which was not compiled of photographs from a runway show.

"It was exciting for me to be the one to do it," she said from her base in Paris.

Maxwell started modelling when she was a student at the University of Otago.

She approached Dunedin agent Aliana McDaniel in 2008 in search of extra pocket money.

Things moved quickly for the leggy blonde when she was signed by Michael Hooker International which helped secure her an agent in Paris.

She is now signed with Trump Model Management in New York, Viva in London and Paris, Why Not Models in Milan and Visage in Tokyo.

In the past two years, she has been on the cover of Elle Italia, featured in fragrance campaigns for Mango in Spain, and shot for Cosmopolitan and Vogue in Italy, Vogue in Germany, Elle in France, Harper's Bazaar in the United States, and walked in London and Paris fashion weeks.

Miss Maxwell hoped to return to New Zealand "in the near future".
