The University of Otago is searching for new offices for some of its Christchurch staff after having to vacate the leased St Elmo Courts building in Hereford St.

The multi-storeyed reinforced concrete building, dating from about 1930, sustained significant structural damage in the September earthquake and aftershocks and has been condemned.

The university owns or leases 11 buildings or parts of buildings near Christchurch Hospital.

Staff from the Maori/Indigenous Health Institute had already moved to a university-owned building in Cambridge Tce, but an alternative home still had to be found for staff in the Department of Public Health and General Practice, the university said yesterday.

The damage to the Christchurch medical school building, attached to the hospital, was minimal, property services manager Barry Mackay said.

It was too early to talk about the cost of repairs but they would be covered by insurance.
