Southern at new home

Southern United is set to play its first game at its new home.

The side will host Hawke’s Bay United at Sunnyvale Park at 11am tomorrow.

The team moved from Peter Johnstone Park this season but has so far played its opening games at Forsyth Barr Stadium and the Caledonian Ground.

With upgrades now complete at the new pitch,  it is ready to move into its new home.

"Pitch-wise, City Care and the DCC, they’ve done a great job renovating that after what’s been a tough winter," Southern United manager Sean Hamill said.

"We’ve installed the box goals which will sort of be a legacy of this, I suppose, in that they’ll be there for the winter season as well.

"Then in the changing rooms I know that the guys from the Green Island Football Club have been working really hard.

"They’ve painted all the rooms in there and cubbies on the walls and turf on the floor and improved the showers and things like that to get it up to a really high spec.

"And that’s obviously on top of all the work that’s gone into the centre itself, which is a great facility."

The team was excited to get on to the pitch for the first time and felt the surface was looking great.

It was not just the players that would benefit from the upgrades either, with fans being able to make the most of the new viewing facilities.

"With the new upgrades upstairs to the facility itself, there’s not only a balcony but big windows and things so people can watch from inside if they want.

"As part of the reconfiguration we’ve shifted the field about 13m, which now basically means the halfway line’s right in line with the veranda terrace area up the top there."
