Getting pinned between two cars was not the ideal start to Cameron Third's day.

The Otago Daily Times paperboy found himself in the painful and awkward situation at 6am yesterday when he was about to collect the morning's papers on Main South Rd, Green Island.

While checking his car was locked, he heard a car skidding on a straight, flat section of road.

The Otago Boys' High School pupil turned to see the driver of a dark Mazda Familia sedan attempting to correct the vehicle's progress. But it hit the rear of Cameron's car, spinning it and pinning the paperboy against another car.

The driver failed to stop, but residents rushed to Cameron's aid and phoned the police and ambulance.

Cameron, a paperboy for three years, sustained bruising to his knee and was given crutches to get around.

His injury will put him out of work for the next two weeks.

His car was a write-off, he said.

His father, St John southern region operations manager Doug Third, was angry his son had been left lying in the road and that a driver would hit someone and not stop to check on them.

The papers on Cameron's run arrived about an hour late after another deliverer took over.

Police are investigating the incident.
