Enthusiasm for learning and innovation in her field have won Karen Cameron a national teaching excellence award.

The St Clair Community Kindergarten assistant head teacher was presented with the NEiTA Foundation national award for excellence in teaching, which includes a $5000 professional development grant from ASG Education Programs, yesterday.

The award was a great honour for her and she gave credit to the teaching team around her.

"We are always striving to offer the best teaching and learning opportunities for children, and the kindergarten has been so supportive of me through this journey."

She introduced thinking and talking boards at the kindergarten to develop greater complexity and quality in the learning process, as well as buddy time to encourage self-esteem and communication.

The grant would be used to attend professional development courses and conferences. Of particular interest for her was a course in Italy that focused on the teacher as a co-learner.

The NEiTA Awards recognise teachers and leaders whose inspirational approach stimulates learning.

Nationally, nine other teachers and leaders from all levels of schooling also received awards and grants.
