While the fishing season for lowland rivers opened on October 1, popular rivers such as the Ahuriri, Hakataramea, Maerewhenua and Tekapo in the Waitaki catchment open later.
However, in the past that has confused some anglers, who have started fishing those rivers from October 1 or mistakenly believed the high country opening was on November 1.
Kurow-based Central South Island Fish and Game Council officer Graeme Hughes will be checking the rivers to make sure anglers observe the official opening day.
This year, it is on Saturday, November 6 for high country rivers, except for the upper Ahuriri River above Longslip Creek, which does not open until the first Saturday in December, which this year falls on December 4.
Mr Hughes said some anglers checked out the high country rivers before the season started to find the best areas for opening day.
Already there had been reports of anglers, including tourists, fishing the high country rivers, believing they opened on October 1 along with lowland rivers.
