Not many creatures possess the patience to hunt something for 15 hours, but Stocky is not your average animal.

The 2-year-old fox terrier was raised with hunting dogs and devotes an uncanny amount of time and energy to pursuing his favourite prey - possums.

Owner Olive McRae has seen him sitting under trees for five hours waiting for possums to move to a spot where he can get them, staring at the floor in her home because he knows a resident possum is under it, and even attempting to dig holes in the carpet to reach it.

"Possums are about his size and he completely annihilates them," she said.

His latest exploit saw him race under the house on Sunday about 4pm in pursuit of the resident possum.

Great commotions, with both possum and dog crying, were heard on and off for the rest of the night.

When Ms McRae got up about 7am she realised Stocky was still under the house and became worried he was stuck.

The fire brigade was called and the floorboards were ripped up to retrieve him.

However, Stocky was not stuck, just determined to make the kill, she said.

After having spent 15 hours under the house, he was dehydrated and exhausted so spent all of yesterday tied up to recover.

"I reckon he would die trying to get it," she said.

Ms McRae believed his antics were so bizarre she wanted to start a blog about his life.

Along with his stint under the house, Stocky has survived being hit by a bulldozer, a 4WD motor bike and a car, as well as being poisoned.

"Every time I think nothing else can happen, something else does."
