The day fireworks went on sale, 20 firefighters fought a grass fire on Cape Wanbrow above Oamaru Harbour.
Fire crews from Oamaru, Weston and the Waitaki Volunteer Rural Fire Force brought the roughly 100m by 50m fire under control in front of scores of onlookers from the harbour below and from Test St, from about 4.30pm yesterday.

Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Fire Officer Warren Stringer said fireworks were the suspected cause of the fire and that this was just the beginning of the season.
"It’s not even summer," he said.
"Green grass burns."
A helicopter was on stand-by if required, but with light onshore winds, no houses were in danger.
