Thorn (33) played goalkeeper in the second half for the Northern division five football side at Brockville Park, managing to keep a clean sheet as his side defeated Roslyn-Wakari 5-0.
The Crusaders lock was banned from playing against the Springboks on Saturday, after a one-week suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct by lifting Springbok captain and hooker John Smit off his feet in Wellington on July 5.
One of his relatives, Chris Trewern, said he had joked with Thorn last week about playing on Saturday.
But the joke became serious when Thorn turned up and got on after half-time, after asking the opposition if he could play.
In front of about 15 spectators, instead of more than 29,000 at Carisbrook, he showed some agility, although he spent some of the time running down a hill to fetch the ball.
Trewern said Thorn had played football when younger, but had little experience in the code.
Roslyn-Wakari coach Chris Cole said it was a surprise to see Thorn in goal and he offered $100 to any of his players if they could score a goal, but Thorn could not be beaten.
Thorn did not have a lot to do but was an "awful toe-hacker" when taking goal-kicks, he said.
